Flow International Corporation (NASDAQ: FLOW – News), High-speed, accurate cutting is now achievable on an affordable waterjet system. The Mach 2c, the newest member of the Flow Mach Series waterjet line, is now available with Dynamic Waterjet® taper compensation. Dynamic Waterjet was previously only available on Flow’s advanced Mach 3 and Mach 4 waterjet systems.

Dynamic Waterjet produces faster, more accurate parts by adjusting taper angle with speed. Stream lag and taper are inherent issues in all waterjet cutting, previously only minimized by reducing cut speed. Dynamic Waterjet with Active Tolerance Control™ counters taper and stream lag using advanced SmartStream™ mathematical models. More than just a tilting cutting head, SmartStream technology changes the angle dynamically, based on cut speed, producing a better part in less time.

“The new Mach 2c with Dynamic Waterjet allows our customers to expand their applications to higher precision work.” comments Chip Burnham, vice president of marketing for Flow International Corporation. “The precision motion system is capable of up to 800 ipm travel while maintaining tight tolerances. Paired with our Dynamic Waterjet, we expect the Mach 2c to be a new workhorse for the waterjet machine tool industry,”

Released in 2011, the Mach 2c Waterjet system is available with multiple cutting head options including; pure waterjet, standard abrasive waterjet, and now Dynamic Waterjet.

Series Adds Value With Reduced Fuel Consumption And Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks, manufacturer of reliable and affordable forklift trucks for hard-working applications, today announced a new series of 8,000-12,000 lb. capacity diesel pneumatic tire forklift trucks. The FD40N1-FD55N1 Series features a new diesel engine that provides a 21.6% increase in fuel efficiency. The engine, which is designed to meet the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Tier 4 Final emissions standards, also offers increased performance and reduced emissions levels.

“We’re committed to providing customers with hardworking and reliable forklifts that deliver exceptional value,” said Lucas Dumdie, product line manager at Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks. “This latest diesel pneumatic tire forklift truck model provides a lower overall operating cost by reducing maintenance and fuel consumption, while providing customers with increased productivity and performance.”

Including a new Tier 4 Final diesel engine was a key component in the update of the FD40N1-FD55N1 Series. These new diesel-engine forklift trucks offer customers a variety of productivity-enhancing features and cost-savings benefits, including:

Reduced Maintenance. Equipped with a Perkins® 854F engine, this class-leading engine operates without requiring any ash service. The reduced maintenance lowers the overall cost of ownership and increases value and reliability for the customer. The engine also features low-noise levels, which helps to reduce operator fatigue throughout the shift.

Improved Energy Efficiency and Higher Performance. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the new FD40N1-FD55N1 automatically regenerates during normal operation, eliminating work cycle interruption, even at low engine speeds. The diesel-powered engine also features a 21.6% improvement in fuel consumption, in addition to the 90% reduction in particulate matter and the nearly 50% reduction of NOx.

Flexible Options. The new series also offers options to further enhance productivity, such as wet-disc brakes, which includes auto-deceleration and controlled rollback to slow and control the forklift. As an added benefit, the braking system doesn’t use the transmission for braking, helping to prevent premature component wear. Other productivity-enhancing options include a low noise kit to help reduce operator fatigue and cab options that help protect the operator from harsh outside elements.

Tier 4 Final Engine. Tier 4 Final is the final level of the current regulatory schedule on diesel exhaust as implemented by the EPA to govern diesel particulate and NOx emissions. Advanced technologies have been incorporated into the new series’ Perkins 854F diesel engine to meet Tier 4 Final regulations. In addition to lowering the amount of Particulate Matter or “soot” that is released into the environment, the new engine also enhances the lift truck’s overall performance and reliability, while also exceeding Tier 4 Final emissions requirements.

ESAB Welding & Cutting Products introduces the new Aristo RT line of robotic torches, designed for world-class performance in single arc or tandem applications.

The Aristo RT range of robotic torches work with three different product set-ups: Standard (external cable), Hollow Wrist Helix (rotation +/- 220o), and Hollow Wrist Infiniturn (endless rotation). Hollow Wrist Infiniturn offers the highest productivity with shorter programming time, shorter cycle time, less downtime, and cost savings as a result of the endlessly turning media coupling, optimization of the welding position, and long life of the cable.

The Aristo RT-42, RT-52, and RT-62 are universal torch necks that are interchangeable with each other. All three robotic necks are available in gas-cooled (RT-42G, RT-52G, RT-62G) and water-cooled (RT-42W, RT-52W, RT-62W) models in different swan neck angles with packages available for KUKA, ABB, Fanuc, and Motoman/Yaskawa robotic systems.

Features include integrated blow-out capability which can be used for cooling and cleaning of the robotic neck, long life consumables, torch body, and spare parts, quick-change torch systems, simple cable replacement, and constant TCP (tool center point).

Reliable and stable TCP ensures continuous production without interruption. Each torch features a large, strong brass outer tube, precise alignment, cable assembly interface, torch mount, and high wall thickness assuring precise and constant TCP, even when changing necks or cables, reducing part programming and program “touch up” time.

The collision-resistant torch design means no readjustment of the torch neck, which reduces downtime and improves productivity. The brass torch flange design results in low spatter adhesion. These torches also feature threaded gas nozzles with additional clamping for better heat transfer, which prolongs consumable life. Optimized gas flow provides a stable and reliable welding arc.

ESAB also offers the Aristo RT NG, narrow gap robotic welding neck, designed for welding in tight places and also available in gas-cooled and water-cooled versions. The NG neck is easily interchangeable using the tool-less connection system, which comes standard on all ESAB robotic torches and necks The Aristo RT NG torch rotates to reach different welding positions, and allows for perfect penetration with lateral welding. This torch can be customized as a special design with different geometry or higher ratings.

ESAB Welding & Cutting Products is a recognized leader in the welding industry. From time-honored processes to revolutionary technologies, ESAB’s filler metals, welding and cutting equipment, and accessories bring solutions to customers around the globe.

Doubles accuracy and increases machine productivity immensely!

In collaboration with NUM, machine tool rebuilder North East Technologies Inc. has developed a CNC retrofit package that brings the performance of early generation hob sharpening equipment up to modern-day standards. The system doubles accuracy and can increase the productivity of machines immensely – by margins of 40% or more. By extending the life of hob sharpening machines and enhancing their performance significantly, the retrofit provides gear manufacturers and tool service companies with a highly cost-effective alternative to purchasing new equipment.

North East Technologies specializes in servicing and rebuilding hob sharpening equipment. The company is renowned for its knowledge of the gear manufacturing process, and a major part of its business is retrofitting modern control systems to early generation hob sharpeners – such as the SNC 30 and AGW Series machines originally produced by Klingelnberg back in the 1980s. To expedite refurbishment, North East Technologies decided to develop a ‘standard’ high performance CNC retrofit package that could readily be adapted to different machine configurations.

Most companies that cut gears or service gear cutting tools have at some time used Klingelnberg SNC 30 hob sharpeners. Capable of handling work pieces up to 300 mm (12 inches) in diameter, they can grind helically fluted hobs to a depth of 90 mm (3.5 inches). They are widely regarded as an industry standard – there are hundreds of these machines in the USA alone, many of which have been in continual use for 25 or more years. However, despite still being mechanically sound, most of these machines are showing signs of age. Their motion control hardware is not up to today’s standards in terms of speed, accuracy or efficiency, so the machines act as a production bottleneck. And as their original CNC systems become increasingly unreliable, and use obsolete components, rising support costs and downtime eventually renders them ineffective.

When choosing a control solution provider for the retrofit package, North East Technologies was heavily influenced by its customers, many of whom request NUM’s CNC technology for machine upgrades. Most of these customers regard NUM’s gear hobbing solution, NUMgear, as the best in the industry, and are aware of the local development resources that can add further functionality from NUM Corporation’s headquarters in Naperville.

According to Harry Salverston, President of North East Technologies, “NUMgear provided much of the functionality we needed for our hob resharper retrofit at the outset, making it an ideal platform. And NUM’s willingness to partner with us to develop application-specific features we wanted – such as a custom HMI and special machine code – confirmed this choice. NUM effectively acted as an extension to our own engineering resources to help speed development.”

The CNC retrofit package content depends on the configuration of the hob sharpener. Basic SNC 30 machines have two CNC axes as standard – one (X) for the wheelhead slide and the other (A) for the workpiece spindle – and can be fitted with a further two optional axes to automate axial (Y) and radial (Z) movement of the wheelhead. At a customer’s request, North East Technologies will incorporate these extra axes during the retrofit process. In addition to upgrading the machine’s controller to a NUM Flexium 68 CNC system, the retrofit replaces all motors and drives with high performance NUM servomotors and NUMDrive C servo drives. The new servomotors are equipped with high resolution 262,000 pulse/rev encoders – the original motor encoders were 1,000 pulse/rev devices – which in conjunction with the powerful Flexium CNC kernel provide much more accurate control of speed and position.

Considerable attention has been paid to ensuring that the HMI of the CNC retrofit preserves the familiar ‘look and feel’ of the original SNC 30 operating system. A ‘fill in the blanks’ programming method, backed by custom control macros, means that the machine operator is not presented with unfamiliar CNC nomenclature, and simply enters parameters such as the length of flute and the amount of material to be removed. Each screen is context-sensitive to eliminate ambiguity. For example, selecting a grinding cycle that uses a CBN (cubic boron nitride) wheel opens a folder that only contains options for CDG (conventional deep grinding) and SDG (single flute deep grinding), with dressing disabled. The software also allows the operator to ‘teach’ the machine the relative positions of the X,Y, Z and A axes under manual control, enabling grinding cycles for different hobs to be developed very easily.

To maximize flexibility, the application accommodates multiple hob sharpening methods, including removal of stock in one or both directions of wheelhead traverse. For straight fluted hobs, as soon as one flute has been sharpened the workpiece is indexed through to the next flute and sharpening recommences. Utilizing the Flexium CNC system’s ‘Dynamic Operator’ (DynOp) function, the machine builder can create custom axes linkage or compensation in real time, at the position loop clock cycle. In the case of sharpening helically fluted hobs, this unique DynOp feature allows the rotary (A) axis to be transparently synchronized to the X axis, so the grinding wheel accurately follows the helix angle.

North East Technologies’ CNC retrofit provides gear manufacturers with considerable long-term benefits, as Harry Salverston points out, “Our first SNC 30 upgrade project using the new NUM package involved retrofitting a two-axis machine, in 2011. This has operated without problems ever since and has enabled our customer to improve the quality of their gear sharpening process substantially by more than doubling its accuracy, as well as increasing throughput by about 40 percent. Together with NUM, we have further developed the CNC retrofit package and following recent orders are currently rebuilding three machines, including a two- to four-axis conversion.”

The Walter Prototyp Paradur® Short Chip HT blind hole tap eliminates “bird’s nest” swarf, boosting process reliability, machine uptime, and tool life.

Walter has introduced the Walter Prototyp Paradur® Short Chip HT blind hole tap, designed to increase process reliability and quality when tapping long-chipping high tensile (HT) strength steels.

Tapping, particularly blind hole tapping, is often a problem with long-chipping high strength materials. That’s because the coiled swarf, or “bird’s nest” that result can endanger the tap and force the machinist to stop the operation in order to clear out the swarf, incurring time and production costs.

The design of the Paradur® Short Chip HT prevents this. It has a 15-degree helix angle for easy chip removal even in deep (3.5xD) and protected threads. This reduces to a 9-degree helix angle which, combined with a ground rake in the chamfer, ensures the creation of short chips. Axial internal cooling rinses these chips out of the hole through the spiral flutes.

In addition, the cutting edges have an adjusted rake angle. Tool life is enhanced by a proven THL hard coating, except on the reduced helix in the lower section of the tool which is ground after the coating is applied. The bare surface of the rake at this point aids chip breaking.

This combination of features enables the Prototyp Paradur® Short Chip HT to reduce machine downtime, reduce tooling costs due to longer tool life, and produce clean and chip free threads. In addition, interference contour is no problem due to the short chips.

While the Paradur® Short Chip HT delivers these benefits on high-tensile long chipping materials, it can also be used on low tensile strength materials such as aluminum alloys or ductile cast iron.

Walter offers an extensive line up of cutting tools for milling, drilling, turning, boring and specialized tooling for unique applications through its competence brands Walter Valenite, Walter Titex and Walter Prototyp. As well as multi-level service programs through its Walter Multiply brand. Headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin the company has a strong network of distributors and field engineers across North America. The Walter name is synonymous with productivity, thanks to more than 80 years of developing cutting tools and inserts that set new standards in quality, innovation and production.

Saelig Company has introduced the TF960, an economical 6GHz bench/portable frequency counter. It features a high quality temperature compensated internal frequency reference (TCXO) which has a low ageing rate and is stable to within ±1ppm over the full temperature range. Its short warm-up time allows accurate measurements to be made even under portable battery powered conditions. An External Reference input is provided and changeover from the internal time-base is automatic when an external reference standard is connected. The TF960 Counter-Timer can measure and count with high sensitivity between 0.001Hz and 6000MHz, and incorporates a USB control interface, which facilitates control and data transfer.

The TF960 Counter-Timer can measure frequency, period, pulse width, duty cycle and frequency ratio, as well as event counting/totalizing. For frequency, period and ratio functions, the TF960 uses a reciprocal counting technique to provide high resolution at all frequencies with up to 10-digit accuracy.

For frequencies up to 125MHz, the TF960 Counter-Timer’s input is configurable as 1M Ohm or 50 Ohm impedance, AC or DC coupling, and 1:1 or 5:1 attenuation. The threshold is fully variable, and the active edge can be a positive or negative transition. Two high frequency inputs cover a range of 80MHz to >3GHz and 2GHz to >6GHz, the latter input being via an N connector.

The TF960 operates from internal rechargeable NiMH batteries which give typically 24 hours operating life. The universal AC charger supplied recharges the batteries in less than 4 hours and can also provide continuous AC operation. The instrument can also be powered from a standard USB port.

The TF960 measures 10.3″ x 3.5″ x 9.3″mm and weighs less than 2 lbs. The high contrast display has ten 0.5″ high digits, along with a comprehensive set of annunciators.

The TF960 Counter-Timer is available now from Saelig Company. Inc. Fairport, NY.
